The Times Online reports that the physicist has been admitted to hospital, stating that he is “very ill”. Hawking, who is 67, has been suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for over forty years. This tragic disease typically kills within three to five years after onset, with 10% of patients survivng 10 years or more. 40 years is extraordinary.
Although we don’t yet know why Hawking was admitted, we can say that in his condition anything is serious.
